Uproar over casinos laughable

EDITOR:

This letter will not be printed until after the Nov. 3 elections, but this has to be said. The uproar about casinos bringing crime, prostitution, drugs and other unsavory vices to our area is almost laughable. We have all of this already. Just read the daily paper or turn on the local news.

We have politicians who throw a tantrum when they don’t get their way with a steel mill expansion, township residents who decry the loss of a local unused rural plot of land and sink the promise of a warehouse bringing hundreds of new jobs and a city school district that is turning out “educated” students perfect for factory jobs, but there are no longer any factory jobs here.

If the political units of this valley ever got together they could be a terrific lobbying block for federal and state assistance and private investment, but the factionalism of the politicians and the people who elect them just increases the chances of our Valley seeing another 30 years of decline.

I’m not sorry to say that I have encouraged by four children to leave this area and I am looking to move out in the next two years. Nothing will get this area back to near what it was until the mind set of residents in Mahoning and Trumbull counties changes to one of cooperation instead of “what’s in it for me.”
