‘Fiddler on Roof’ added to Broadway series

CLEVELAND — Playhouse Square has added “Fiddler on the Roof” to its 2009-10 KeyBank Broadway Series to replace “Dirty Dancing,” which has postponed its tour. “Fiddler” will run June 15-27, 2010, at the Palace Theatre.

The Tony Award-winning musical will feature Chaim Topol, star of the 1971 film, in the role of Tevye. The seven-show Broadway Series also includes: “Young Frankenstein,” Oct. 13-25; “Chicago,” Jan. 12-24, 2010; “In the Heights,” Feb. 9-21, 2010; “Xanadu,” March 2-14, 2010; “August: Osage County,” April 13-25, 2010; and “Grease,” May 11-23, 2010.

Historical society seeks vintage holiday items

YOUNGSTOWN — The Arms Family Museum of Local History, 648 Wick Ave., will again display local and Mahoning Valley Historical Society holiday collections this November and December.

The exhibition, titled “Holiday in Motion,” will feature one-of-a-kind, mechanical motion Christmas decorations, a 9-foot tree with hundreds of vintage ornaments, a Santa room and antique trains.

The MVHS is seeking items, including lights, bulbs, Santa figures, trains and religious collections, to become part of the display. It will accept items on a short-term loan or as a donation to the permanent collection.

Victorian Players to present ‘Tartuffe’

YOUNGSTOWN — Moliere’s classic comedy “Tartuffe” will open Friday for a three-weekend run at Victorian Players Theater, 702 Mahoning Ave.

Curtain times are 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $10 ($8 for seniors and students).

Nominees sought for charity softball game

NILES — The Hope Foundation of the Mahoning Valley will again honor a community member by letting them play in the annual Softball Game of Hope, which will be Aug. 1 at Eastwood Field.

The game pits local celebrities against each other to raise money for chronically and terminally ill children in the Valley. It precedes a Scrappers baseball game.

Tickets are $7 for both games with a $3 donation going to the cause. First pitch is 4 p.m.

Residents can nominate a person to play in the game by going to hopemv.org. Deadline is June 12. Nominees must be residents who donate their time and efforts to their community.

Over the past four years, the Hope Foundation of the Mahoning Valley has donated more than $15,000 to charities.

Time Warner adds high-definition channels

AKRON – Time Warner Cable announced last week that Smithsonian HD and MavTV HD have been added to the channel lineup. Both channels are part of the HD Package Tier.

Smithsonian Networks, channel 471, features programming that is inspired by the Smithsonian Institution’s resources, with original features and series in subjects such as air and space, pop culture, history and mystery and natural wonders.

MavTV, channel 472, features original programming that appeals to men. Original series include: “American Tailgater,” “AMAMotorcycle Racing,” “Whole World Theatre,” “Mini Cooper Auto Racing,” regional wrestling events, “Ultimate Combat Experience” and “Bikini AllStars.”

The HD Package Tier is available to digital customers for $6.95. Other HD Package Tier channels include Universal HD (470) and MGM HD (473).
