CAMPBELL — Tickets are now on sale for the pro/amateur boxing card at Campbell Memorial High School on June 27.

The TKO Promotions “Steel Valley Rumble” will be highlighted by WBF cruiserweight champion Andres Taylor (8-0, 4 KOs).

The co-feature will have Jake Giuriceo (2-0) of Struthers and the Burnside Boxing Club.

Welterweight Jesse Lubash (11-0, 7 KOs) of Pittsburgh and middleweight Tommy Joseph (5-2) will also fight.

Wolfe sings today

BALTIMORE — There will be a local angle when the Detroit Tigers play the Baltimore Orioles today at Camden Yards at 7:05 p.m.

Singing the national anthem will be Matt Wolfe, a 2006 graduate of Lowellville High School and a student at YSU.

On Feb. 21, Wolfe sang the national anthem prior to the Kelly Pavlik fight at the then Chevrolet Centre.

South Range hires Wayne Johnson

NORTH LIMA — Wayne Johnson has replaced Matt Reel as the South Range High girls basketball varsity coach.

In five seasons for Columbiana, Johnson’s team compiled a 72-19 record. He led the Clippers to a regional game in 2007 then resigned because of work/travel conflicts. Johnson is vice president of sales at Austintown’s Ply-Trim Companies.

Reel led the Raiders to the Inter Tri-County League Tier One crown in 2007-08. This past season, the Raiders were 12-9.

Warren JFK picks Villella to coach

WARREN — Brent Villella has been hired to coach the Warren JFK High varsity basketball team.

Villella is a 2003 graduate of Mooney High and a 2007 graduate of Kent State University (integrated mathematics).

He was student manager for the Kent State basketball team for three season and has been an assistant freshman coach at Ravenna High and freshman coach at Hudson High.

Racing bailout night

HARTFORD — The first of three ‘Bail Out’ Fan Appreciation Nights will be on tap tonight at Sharon Speedway, as the Warren Harley-Davidson 410 sprint cars take center stage at the Trumbull County motorsports complex.

Pittsburgh-area teenager Danny Holtgraver and Kevin Schaeffer of Kittanning, Pa split the first two sprint car feature races of the season, and will be the favorites going into tonight’s action.

Fans will be the beneficiaries of the Bail Out Fan Appreciation Night, as all adults will be discounted.

Rachel Alexandra won’t run in Belmont

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Preakness winner Rachel Alexandra will not run in the Belmont Stakes, opening the way for jockey Calvin Borel to return to Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird in his quest for a personal Triple Crown.

Jess Jackson, Rachel Alexandra’s co-owner, said Friday the spectacular filly “deserves a well-earned vacation.”

Buckeyes routed

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Matt Cerione and Joey Lewis homered in Georgia’s eight-run first inning and the Bulldogs used seven home runs to cruise past Ohio State 24-8 in the NCAA baseball tournament.

Rich Poythress hit three homers, while Cerione and Lewis each homered twice as Georgia (38-22) withstood a five-hour weather delay before setting season highs for runs and hits.

The Bulldogs battered Big Ten co-pitcher of the year Alex Wimmers (9-2) for 10 runs in four innings.

Stricker out front

FORT WORTH, Texas — Steve Stricker shot his second straight 63 on Friday morning, giving him a 14-under 126 total that set records for 36 holes and for any consecutive rounds at the Crowne Plaza Invitational in the Colonial Country Club PGA event.
