Springfield Twp. levy

Springfield Twp. levy

NEW SPRINGFIELD — Springfield Township voters could see a 2-mill continuous replacement police levy on the ballot in November.

At a special meeting Thursday, township trustees asked the county auditor to certify the millage so they can vote to place it on the ballot at their June 10 meeting.

Trustees won’t know how much the replacement levy would bring in until they receive the certification from the auditor.

YOUNGSTOWN — About 3,700 Ohio Edison customers on the city’s South Side and downtown were without power for a time Thursday.

A transformer at the company’s Indianola Avenue substation stopped working at 1:44 p.m., and power was out until 2:09 p.m., said Paul Harkey, the company’s area manager.

Niles burglary suspects

NILES — Two city residents pleaded innocent to burglary charges in Niles Municipal Court on Thursday after they were arrested Wednesday night inside a home on South Cedar Avenue.

Heather Bako, 29, of Dakota Avenue, and John J. Melius, 37, of Woodglen Avenue, were both being held in Trumbull County Jail on $10,000 bond.

They are scheduled to return to court at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday.

If convicted, each could get up to eight years in prison.

Police said they were called to 227 Cedar at 5:56 p.m. for four people breaking into a house. A witness said one of the four cut a screen from a window and forced open the window, and then a woman was lifted into it. The woman later opened the door to allow the others to enter, police said.

When police arrived, only Bako and Melius were there.

Hit-and-run probe

YOUNGSTOWN — Police are still looking for the driver of a gray Oldsmobile 88 that struck two women in wheelchairs.

The Oldsmobile likely has damage and missing parts after the accident. Police recovered two pieces of the car — one with “Eighty Eight” engraved on it and the other with “Delta Royal” engraved on it.

According to police, Brandy Spangler, 29, of Seneca Street, and Kerri Bartelson, 31, of Verona Avenue, were traveling along McCartney Road in the wheelchairs just before 9:30 p.m. Wednesday when the car struck the two women from behind. Spangler was hit first, and then the car swerved left and struck Bartelson.

Witnesses told police the car sped off after hitting the women.

Both women were taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center and listed in stable condition.
