BOARDMAN — Eight area high school seniors have been awarded $6,000 scholarships from the Edward J. DeBartolo Memorial Scholarship Foundation.

The recipients were recognized at a luncheon Wednesday at the Holiday Inn. Denise DeBartolo York and her husband, Dr. John York, presented the awards in honor of her father, Edward J. DeBartolo Sr., a business and community leader in the Mahoning Valley for more than 50 years and founder of the Edward J. DeBartolo Corp.

The foundation has awarded more than $400,000 in scholarships over the past 12 years.

The goal of the foundation has been to reward hard-working Valley students with the opportunity to go to college, DeBartolo York said.

“My father believed that all students who have demonstrated intensity and desire, regardless of their financial situation, should be afforded the opportunity to receive a college education,” she said.
