YOUNGSTOWN — Thirty-three YSU student-athletes earned a 4.0 grade-point average for the 2009 spring semester and for the spring term, 50 percent of the Penguin athletes obtained a GPA of at least 3.0.

The cross country squad topped the overall list and the women’s list with a 3.52 of the 16 sponsored teams, nine of which achieved a GPA of 3.0 or better.

The men’s group to earn the highest GPA was golf with a 3.23 GPA.

Of the 325 student-athletes, 163 posted a GPA of 3.0 or better.

Tennis player Irena Lanc recently graduated from YSU and maintained a 4.0 during her entire athletic career.

Team Metro soccer

EUCLID — The Team Metro U-18 boys soccer team defeated Euclid 2-1 in the championship game of the Euclid Memorial Soccer Tournament.

That is the fourth consecutive year Team Metro has won the event.

The Team Metro U-16 boys went undefeated in pool play and defeated JK United 2-0 to win the championship.

Also, the Team Metro U-18 girls were defeated by JK United 2-0 in the championship game.

Thomas still unbeaten

PITTSBURGH — Amateur boxer Julius Thomas took a three-round unanimous decision from Zack Homol of Pittsburgh.

Thomas (6-0) fights at 141-pounds and trains at the Burnside Boxing Club.

Homol is 4-3.

Scrappy’s Kids Club

NILES — The Mahoning Valley Scrappers are now registering children age 12-under for their Scrappy’s Kids Club.

Presented by Akron Children’s Hospital of Mahoning Valley and 21 WFMJ, participants in the program receive a ticket to all 38 home games, a T-shirt and special discounts.

Belmont’s Met Mile

NEW YORK — Bribon turned the corner this spring at Belmont Park. Trainer Bobby Ribaudo hopes the 6-year-old gelding never looks back, following his half-length victory over Smooth Air on Monday in the $600,000 Metropolitan Handicap.

Bribon ran the race of his life to win the Westchester Handicap at Belmont on April 29. The oldest horse in the race kicked it up another notch in the Met Mile, the traditional Memorial Day feature.

Now Bribon gets a rest until August in Saratoga.

Winning Colors

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Dubai Majesty rallied for a second time after being passed by Lady Chace and reclaimed the lead to grab the win at the Winning Colors (Grade III) feature race on Monday at Churchill Downs.

Ridden by Jaime Theriot and trained by Bret Calhoun, Dubai Majesty grabbed her first graded stakes victory for fillies and mares. Owned by Martin Racing Stable LLC and Dan Morgan, Dubai Majesty finished the six furlongs in 1:10.61.

Dubai Majesty returned $4.60, $3 and $2.60. Keep the Peace returned $4 and $3.40 and Lady Chace paid $4 to show.

The victory was worth $66,169 and increased Dubai Majestys career earnings to $395,957.

Giro cycling race

MONTE PETRANO, Italy — Lance Armstrong’s preparation for the Tour de France is going so well, the seven-time Tour winner put aside his own ambitions to help a struggling teammate.

On a day when the thermometer soared to 100 degrees, Armstrong was riding with the race favorites up the final climb of the 16th stage of the Giro d’Italia on Monday when he realized that fellow Astana rider Levi Leipheimer had dropped behind.
