Statue dedication
BOARDMAN — A blessing and dedication ceremony for the St. Elizabeth and the Beggar Statue will be at 1:45 p.m. June 2 outside the main entrance of St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center, 8401 Market St.
Bishop George Murry of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown will offer the blessing. The statue will serve as a tribute to the memory of John M. and Lillian C. Newman for their dedicated service and support to Humility of Mary Health Partners, hospital officials said.
In 1970, John Newman was one of the first four laypersons to serve on the St. Elizabeth Hospital Health Center advisory board. In 1977, the advisory board was incorporated into the board of trustees, and he was elected chairman, serving in that capacity until St. Joseph and St. Elizabeth hospitals merged in 1995.
In 1996, he became the first chairman of the board of the newly formed St. Elizabeth Development Foundation and remained a member for the maximum term of nine years, at which time he was appointed emeritus director.
