School district to have classes on Memorial Day

FAIRFIELD, Ohio (AP) — Students in one southwest Ohio school district will be in class while their peers get a day off for Memorial Day.

Fairfield schools in Butler County will make up the last of nine days missed because of a September wind storm and winter weather closings. The town also canceled its parade and replaced it with a smaller event.

The district of 10,100 students will be the only one open in Ohio on Monday, though one school in the Cincinnati suburb of Wyoming also will have class.

The decision has angered some veterans and parents in Fairfield who say it’s disrespectful.

School officials say it prevents seniors from having to attend a day of class after graduation. They are planning in-school events to honor the holiday.
