New Castle gets grant

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — The city has been awarded a $10,861 grant under the state Department of Environmental Protection’s Recycling Performance Grant Program.

State Rep. Chris Sainato, D-Lawrence-Beaver, said the grant is based on 1,074 tons of material the city recycled in 2005 and on the city’s population.

Prestigious membership

WARREN — Dr. Leonard P. Berenholz, a partner in the Lippy Group, will be admitted to the Trilogic Society on Friday in Phoenix, Ariz., during the organization’s annual meeting.

Dr. Berenholz is known for inventing a bone-anchored hearing-aid surgery procedure, which is done for people who are totally deaf in one ear and who have good hearing in the other.

Candidates for the procedure are patients who have all three bones of the middle ear missing, destroyed either by chronic disease or by previous unsuccessful surgery. A small percentage of people have this as a congenital condition.

“Membership in the Trilogic Society is a tremendous achievement for Dr. Berenholz. Only a small percentage of applicants are accepted to the society. It requires a thesis submission, which is reviewed by a peer review panel of seven physicians,” said Dr. William Lippy, partner in the Lippy Group.

Firefighters injured

YOUNGSTOWN — A house fire that appears to have been intentionally set caused about $10,000 in property loss and minor injuries to firefighters Reinaldo M. Sanchez, 58, and Timothy P. McGarry, 54.

Firefighters responded around 1 a.m. Saturday to the house at 226 Lincoln Park. A Molotov cocktail-type of glass bottle was found outside.

The fire began on the first floor, spreading to the second floor and the attic.

In critical condition

BROOKFIELD — The Warren Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a crash that sent one person to the hospital.

Edward A. Walsh III, 61, of Brookfield, was listed in critical condition Saturday in St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown.

The crash occurred around 9:30 p.m. Friday on Warren-Sharon Road, west of state Route 7. A jeep driven by Walter W. Wolanin, 49, of Masury made a left turn from a private drive onto Warren-Sharon Road to head east. The vehicle’s lights weren’t on.

Walsh’s car was eastbound on Warren-Sharon and struck Wolanin’s jeep in the rear. Walsh’s car then struck the left fender of an SUV driven by Alisha L. Davis, 29, of Hubbard, who was westbound. Walsh’s car then rolled over, resting on its top.

Neither of the other two drivers nor the passenger in Wolanin’s vehicle, Alexander S. Wolanin, 82, of Brookfield, were injured.
