Motorcycle rider killed

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — An early- morning motorcycle accident in Shenango Township resulted in the death of a woman. Just after midnight Friday, township police responded to a one-vehicle accident at Ellwood Road, just north of Center Church Road. Police said the motorcycle, which was carrying two people, was traveling north on Ellwood when the cyclist lost control. Both people were thrown from the motorcycle. The female passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, and a condition report on the male driver wasn’t available, police said. Police did not release their names, ages or addresses. The accident remains under investigation.

Click It or Ticket

POLAND — Township police, in conjunction with the Ohio Department of Public Safety, are participating in the statewide Click It or Ticket mobilization through May 31. The program focuses on seat-belt use and compliance with the safety-restraint laws. The main goal is to save lives by having the motoring public buckle up. This year, students from various schools in Mahoning County showed their artistic talents by making posters regarding seat-belt use. Dobbins Elementary and Holy Family schools were among participating schools. Poland Giant Eagle and Save-A-Lot have displays showcasing the posters from both schools.

Car ends up in lake

LISBON — A Lisbon man’s car ended up on its roof in a lake after he lost control Friday morning on Case Road in Knox Township, the Ohio State Highway Patrol reported. According to authorities with the patrol’s Lisbon post, Michael Miller, 26, was driving north on the road at 3:30 a.m. when he lost control of the car, striking a tree and ending upside-down in about 3 feet of water. He was able to get out of the car on his own and was taken to Salem Community Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, the patrol said. State troopers are investigating the accident.

Knife used in robbery

CAMPBELL — A woman brandishing a large knife robbed the owner of Christy’s Pastry Shoppe of $50, police reported. Police said officers responded to the robbery at the store on 12th Street at 8:20 a.m. Friday. The owner reported the woman came in, went around the counter and showed the knife. She demanded money and threatened to kill the store owner if she called authorities, police reported. Police searched the area but could not find the woman.

Workplace violence

SALEM — A program to prevent workplace violence will be from 8 to 9:30 a.m. May 29 at Kent State City Center Auditorium, 230 N. Lincoln Ave. There’s no cost, and any attending company will get a free organizational guide. Issues include the impact of violence on a company, the legal and liability issues of workplace violence, how one workplace responds to violence and the help that is available to companies. The event is sponsored by the YWCA of Salem, Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, Kent State University, Help Hotline Crisis Center Inc. and the Columbiana County Department of Job & Family Services. United Way fundraiser

YOUNGSTOWN — O’Charley’s Pro/Am Bass Classic, a fundraiser for Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way, will be May 30 at Evans and Pine lakes. Amateur entrants can pair with a professional angler for a $300 donation. Also, a Kids Fish and Fun Event will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Evans Lake. The day will end with a weigh-in at 2:15 p.m. Pine Lake is off Market Street (state Route 7) in North Lima in the Pine Lake Reserve Development, about two miles from the state Route 164 intersection.
