Police say Cleveland man killed by off-duty officer

CLEVELAND (AP) — Police in Cleveland say an off-duty officer shot and killed a suspect accused of robbing passing motorists.

The coroner’s office identified the man killed early today as 22-year-old Cory Dix of Cleveland.

Police are investigating reports that Dix and other unidentified suspects stopped and robbed motorists before encountering the off-duty officer.

A police spokesman said the eight-year officer, who has not been identified, was robbed at gunpoint after his personal vehicle was stopped. The spokesman says at least two shots hit the officer’s car in an exchange of gunfire with the man who was killed.

Following standard procedure, the officer will be placed on at least three days of administrative leave while the investigation continues.
