Family escapes fire that destroys condo

LEETONIA — Village Fire Chief Ken Garlough has asked the state fire marshal’s office to investigate two fires that first damaged and then destroyed a rental condo.

The stand-alone building burned to the ground around 3 a.m. Wednesday.

The occupant, Greg Dawson, his wife and a child were not hurt but lost everything in the blaze.

Garlough said Dawson came to the village in November. The chief said the American Red Cross had put them up in a local motel.

The fire department was called about 5:05 p.m. Tuesday when a grill fire on the condo’s deck got out of control.

The second fire damaged the siding and windows of nearby condos.

The chief said he did not have a loss estimate.

Shane Cartmill, a spokesman for the state fire marshal’s office, said investigators are trying to determine the cause of the second blaze.
