Dayton cop indicted in illegal sales

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — A grand jury has returned a 22-count indictment accusing a Dayton police officer of illegally selling three impounded vehicles.

Officer Phillip Brooks Sr., 43, was charged Thursday with seven counts of forgery, eight counts of tampering with records, three counts of unauthorized use of a database, two counts of grand theft, one count of attempted grand theft and one count of theft in office.

Montgomery County prosecutors say Brooks used a confidential police database to determine the owner of vehicles that had been towed or impounded, forged a bill of sale, had a new title issued in his name, then sold the vehicles to other people.

Brooks is expected to be arraigned June 4.
