Warren PD, Trumbull sheriff receive $423K in federal funds

WARREN — The Warren Police Department and Trumbull County Sheriff’s Department will receive $423,987 through the federal Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program.

The money is slated to be used to improve the criminal justice system while supporting the creation of jobs and much-needed resources for states and local communities.

The Warren Police Department officials in early April said they will attempt to use federal stimulus money to help in an effort to bring 10 police officers back from layoff and retain 20 others.

The city was to get more than $200,000 from the grant for three years, which it will use to pay part of the wages of employees on layoff or in danger of layoff.

The sheriff’s department earlier had said it would use its JAG share of more than $100,000 to buy new cruisers.

The JAG Program is the primary provider of federal criminal justice funding to state and local jurisdictions and is managed by the Department’s Office of Justice Programs’ Bureau of Justice Assistance.
