No acquittal in bathtub drowning

LEBANON, Ohio (AP) — A judge has denied a motion to acquit a southwest Ohio man convicted of drowning his wife in a bathtub.

An attorney for 28-year-old Ryan Widmer had said that evidence supported an acquittal and that a prosecutor made a point in closing arguments that was not presented in testimony.

Warren County Common Pleas Judge Neal Bronson ruled Wednesday that the defense’s arguments were not sufficient to overturn the verdict.

Defense attorney Charlie Rittgers also has alleged juror misconduct, saying juror statements indicate some of them performed home experiments.

The judge says he’ll consider juror statements before deciding whether to grant a new trial.
