A listing of Memorial Day events as submitted to The Vindicator. All events are Monday unless otherwise noted.

MAHONING COUNTY

Boardman: 105th Memorial Day Parade and service. Participating groups will assemble at 9:30 a.m. at Center Middle School on Market Street, and the parade will begin at 10 a.m. The parade will proceed north on Market Street to U.S. Route 224, then east on Route 224 to Boardman Township Park and then continue into the park to the Maag Outdoor Arts Theatre for the service. People attending may want to take their own folding chairs. Lt. Col. Bill Moss, who is retired from the Air Force, will be the parade grand marshal and speaker. The Rev. Ash Welch of Boardman United Methodist Church will give the invocation. Mark Luke, a Boardman Kiwanis Club member, will be master of ceremonies at the services. Members of the Boardman High School National Honor Society will place a wreath in honor of military personnel serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and the rest of the world. The Boardman Spartan Marching Band will march in the parade, and the Boardman Spartan Wind Ensemble will provide music for the memorial service. In the event of rain, the service will be in the Center Middle School auditorium.

Boardman: Lake Park Cemetery Association along with the Struthers Unit of the American Legion Post and Struthers High School Marching Band will conduct a ceremony at the veterans section of the cemetery, 1459 E. Midlothian Blvd., at 11 a.m. Peggy Bishop, representing Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman, Ohio, will be the speaker.

Campbell: Annual Memorial Day program will be sponsored by American Legion Post 560 and will begin at 9 a.m. at St. John Cemetery, Villa Marie Road. The group will proceed to Archangel Michael, St. John, St. Nicholas and Pioneer Methodist cemeteries. At 11 a.m. a program will be at Campbell Memorial High School monument. Remarks will be made by Judge Patrick Cunning of Campbell Municipal Court, Mayor John Dill and school Superintendent Tom Robey. The keynote speaker will be U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th. All are invited to Post 560, 103 12th Street, after the service.

Lowellville: St. John Cemetery, Villa Maria Road, will celebrate the annual Memorial Day Mass at 9 a.m. Refreshments will be served.

New Middletown: Memorial parade lineup at 9 a.m. at Springfield High School, and the parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. with a Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. at Springfield Elementary School.

North Lima: Memorial Day Parade forms at 10 a.m. at Berlin Industries; antique cars line up at Good Hope Lutheran Church, judging at 10:30 a.m.; and parade steps off at 11 a.m. The memorial service will be held at the Veterans Memorial immediately after the parade.

Poland: Parade and memorial ceremonies by American Legion Mahoning Valley Post 15, American Legion Auxiliary Mahoning Valley Unit 15 and Sons of the American Legion Mahoning Valley Squadron 15 with 9 a.m. opening ceremony honoring the Four Chaplains — Lt. George L. Fox, Lt. Alexander D. Goode, Lt. John P. Washington and Lt. Clark V. Poling — who gave their lifejackets to four others when their ship, the USTA Dorchester, sank after being torpedoed by a German submarine. They were last seen linked arm in arm, when their ship sank into the icy waters. Parade begins at 10 a.m. at Lee and Cortland streets.; 10:15 a.m. Main Street Bridge Memorial Service for those lost at Sea; 10:30 a.m. full memorial services in Riverside Cemetery. Speaker of the day, Judge Theresa Dellick of Mahoning County Juvenile Court. Grand Marshal, William Benton, past commander of Poland Post 145. In case of inclement weather, ceremonies will be in Poland Middle School gymnasium.

Struthers: The Tri-State Marine Corps Detachment will conduct a Memorial Day service at 8 a.m. at the Beirut Memorial on the shores of Lake Hamilton along state Route 616. The service will last about 20 minutes.

Youngstown: Smoky Hollow Memorial Day Service, 11:15 a.m., at Walnut Street and Rayen Avenue.

Youngstown: Memorial Day Program/Dinner sponsored by the American Legion and Ladies Auxiliary George Washington Carver Post 504, 2225 Glenwood Ave. Join us in honoring our fallen comrades at 5 p.m. at the dinner. Keynote speaker will be Robert Bush, assistant Mahoning County prosecutor, and the guest speaker will be Steffon Jones of Youngstown, historical researcher and Civil War re-enactor.

Youngstown: VFW Post 6468 and its Ladies Auxiliary will honor widows of military personnel during their Memorial Day service Monday. Former state Sen. Harry Meshel, representing Gov. Theodore Strickland, will present special tributes to the widows at the ceremony, which begins at 1 p.m. at 2065 Coitsville-Hubbard Road. The public is invited. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Shawn D. White, advisor to the commander of the 910th Airlift Wing at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna, is the keynote speaker. He will be introduced by Youngstown Municipal Court Judge Robert P. Milich, a retired Air Force colonel. Special recognitions will also be paid to the widows by Mahoning County Commissioners Anthony Traficanti and David Ludt, and by Ray Ornelas on behalf of Barry Landgraver, director of the Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission. The program includes placing a wreath at the flag pole by Lloyd O. Mims Sr., past post commander, and Henry Clarett, past county commander, said program chairman, Herman Adams.

TRUMBULL COUNTY

Howland: Shepherd of the Valley/Howland, 4100 N. River Road, will host a Memorial Day service at 3:30 p.m. today. The Trumbull County American Legion Honor Guard will Post the Colors. Retired Army Col. Robert Mangold will conduct the “Four Chaplains” Service.

Brookfield: The annual Memorial Day Parade will form at 9 a.m. behind Brookfield Middle School on Grove Street. At 10 a.m. the parade will begin and continue west on Grove Street, then south on state Route 7 to the Brookfield Township Cemetery. Anyone who would like to participate is welcome. A veterans memorial service will be below the flagpole at the back of the cemetery immediately after the parade.

Fowler: Church services will be at 10 a.m. at Fowler United Methodist Church followed by a parade at 11 a.m. and services on the Green, conducted by Vienna VFW Post 3521. Transportation will be provided for any veteran who is unable to march. A light lunch will be served at the Fowler Fire Station immediately after the services on the Green, free and open to the public. The Butts House Museum and 1952 Town Hall will be open to the public from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

COLUMBIANA COUNTY

Columbiana: American Legion Memorial Day Parade and Service, 10 a.m. Parade begins at Main Street and East Park Avenue to Firestone Cemetery.

Salem: Salem Memorial and Patriotic Association selected Lena Scullion, 94, who was a nurse in the Army Air Corps serving overseas during World War II treating and caring for wounded soldiers, as the honorary parade marshal for the Salem Memorial Day Parade, which will step off at 10 a.m. The parade will form at Broadway Avenue and proceed to Grandview Cemetery for formal services with full military honors. Judge C. Ashley Pike of Columbiana County Common Pleas Court will be the featured speaker.

MERCER COUNTY

Mercer: Mercer Memorial Day 500, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Banners honoring county servicemen displayed at Mercer County Courthouse. Race through the flags, 9-9:30 a.m.; fun and games for students, 9-11; patriotic program, 9:30-10:15; veterans’ reception, 9:30-10:30; military induction ceremony,10:30; parade, 11-noon; memorial salute, noon to 1 p.m. at Citizens Cemetery. If bad weather, meet at Mercer High School for patriotic program at 9:30; veterans’ reception, 10 a.m.; mass induction, 11 a.m.; memorial salute, 11:30 a.m.
