Car czar says a strong GM is needed
President Barack Obama’s “car czar” is headed to Ohio this week but is skipping the Mahoning Valley because of the promise of a new car coming to General Motors’ Lordstown complex.
U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown said on a conference call this morning that he asked Ed Montgomery to visit Dayton, Toledo and Twinsburg, which have been hit hard by auto cutbacks. Brown said he’s optimistic about Lordstown because the Chevrolet Cruze is to be launched from there next April.
Montgomery, federal director of recovery for auto communities and workers, will be meeting with workers and elected officials where he visits to talk about how the federal government can help recovery efforts. He said it will not be his last visit to Ohio.
When asked about the Cruze, Montgomery said, “We need to have a strong GM and we need GM to get into new kinds of cars for the future that are fuel efficient and have Americans producing them.”
