McDonald captures ITCL Tier Two title
BERLIN CENTER — Anthony Raschilla had two hits, including a three-run triple in the fourth inning, to lead the McDonald High baseball team to its second straight league title, beating Western Reserve 8-3 on Monday.
Raschilla finished with four RBIs for McDonald (16-2, 13-1 Inter Tri-County League Tier Two), which won the league outright by avenging its only league loss.
Devin Vansberg also had two hits, while Zach Puntel (3-0) held Reserve to three runs over six innings to pick up the win.
John Vora had two hits for Western Reserve (11-12).
Akron Springfield 6, Southeast 3
RAVENNA — Anthony Pennington homered and Nick Hopkins added three hits, including a double, to lead Southeast (7-17, 2-11 PTC Metro).
Springfield is 7-17, 3-10.
Softball Poland 5, Canfield 1
POLAND – Erin Gabriel pitched a five-hitter with seven strikeouts and also clubbed a solo homer to lead Poland, which clinched the outright championship of the All-American Conference Red Tier.
Jenna Modic had a double, single and two RBIs to also pace Poland (23-3, 8-0 AAC Red Tier).
Gabriel bested Sarah Vrabel of Canfield (14-14, 6-2), who pitched a seven-hitter.
Ursuline 6, Rootstown 1
ROOTSTOWN — Casey Lower pitched a two-hitter with nine strikeouts to lead Ursuline (22-5), which benefited from seven walks and five hit batsmen.
Lower (21-5) has accounted for all but one of Ursuline’s decisions this year.
Roostown is 13-10.
Mooney 7, South Range 6
BOARDMAN — Mooney rallied four times, eventually winning in eight innings.
Trailing 6-5 in the top of the eighth, Vickie Farris reached on an error and Katie Hughes followed with a single.
Then, with runners on second and third, Kelcie Herberger hit a grounder to the right side to score Farris.
Pinch-runner Carleen Kalasky then raced home on a throwing error.
Herberger had three hits, Meghan Williams singled and doubled and Jamie Clausen added two hits for the Cardinals (18-7).
Sophomore Cadi Sheffler (5-1) struck out eight over four innings of relief.
Madison Yanek struck out three in a complete game loss.
Yanek, Megan Beachley and Kate Libb had two hits for South Range.
Kristin Robinson and Beachley homered and Gab Naples doubled for South Range (18-7).
Southeast 6, Akron Springfield 4
RAVENNA — Emily Coy had a two-run single and Shannon Hamilton tossed a six-hitter to get the win for Southeast (16-5, 11-2 PTC Metro).
Springfield is 17-7, 10-3.
