Happy 100th Birthday to Sally Johnson

Born: May 20, 1909, in Valley Forge, Tenn.

Siblings: Mrs. Johnson was the youngest of 10 children. When she was 3 months of age, her mother died and her father gave her to his wife’s brother to raise.

Married: Twice.

Children: She had two children during her first marriage. In 1932 she married Aaron Johnson, a widower who had eight children. The couple had six more children.

Moved: Job opportunities prompted the Johnsons to move to Ohio in the 1950s.

Employment: During the past 57 years, she worked as a press operator for both Modern Laundry & Dry Cleaning and Master’s Dry Cleaners in Warren. She also ran a boarding house at the corner of Market and Vine streets in Warren.

Hobbies: She is actively involved with family and friends. Each year she organizes the family’s two-day apple butter cookout. The first day, she oversees the preparation of Northern Spy apples, which she says make the best applesauce, and on the second day oversees the cooking.

Celebrations: Friends and family are invited to a dinner party in her honor at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Shepherd of the Valley-Niles, 1500 McKinley Ave., Niles. The family will provide a birthday cake for nursing home residents to share at their lunch.
