Ohio town raises $3K for homeless victim’s surgery

REYNOLDSBURG, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio community has raised $3,000 to help pay for reconstructive facial surgery on a homeless man who was attacked and beaten this week.

Reynoldsburg residents say 50-year-old Robert Wirtz is a well-known fixture who sleeps outside a hardware store in the Columbus suburb.

A store employee found Wirtz on Monday, his face swollen and beaten. Employee Cody Lemaster said Wirtz’s face looked like a pumpkin smashed on concrete.

The hardware store collected donations for surgery scheduled today at a Columbus hospital.

No one has been arrested. Reynoldsburg Mayor Brad McCloud says police have little to go on, although Wirtz told authorities that two men attacked him.
