Authorities probe fires at Northside hospital

YOUNGSTOWN — Officials are trying to determine who set three fires in rooms at Forum Health Northside Medical Center.

Fire units were called to the medical facility at 500 Gypsy Lane in Youngstown just before 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. Firefighters found a paper- towel dispenser had been set afire in room 1104. Firefighters also found fires had been set in rooms 1106 and 1107.

The fires were contained to wall-mounted paper-towel dispensers where they had been set.

Property loss is valued at about $2,000.

ACE president’s trial to begin in late June

YOUNGSTOWN — Ivan Maldonado, president of the Association of Classified Employees union at Youngstown State University, has a June 22 trial date in municipal court.

Judge Robert A. Douglas Jr. set the start of trial on a misdemeanor menacing charge for 11 a.m. that day.

Maldonado has been on paid administrative leave since March 13 after another ACE union member filed a complaint with university police contending that she felt threatened by a March 10 telephone call she received from Maldonado.

The city prosecutor filed one count of menacing against him.

Maldonado has pleaded innocent to the charge and remains free on his own recognizance.

United Way fundraiser

YOUNGSTOWN — United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley is having a spaghetti-dinner fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, 343 Via Mount Carmel.

Tickets are $7 each and will be sold at the door. The dinner includes meatballs, salad, rolls, cake and coffee. Catering is by Fusillo Catering. Carry-out is available.

The fundraiser is sponsored by ClearChannel Radio and Rossi Brothers & Lellio Funeral Home.

There will be a Chinese auction featuring various gift baskets and a 50/50 drawing. All proceeds will benefit the United Way.

Grant for adult day care

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Foundation has made a $6,000 grant to the Antonine Sisters Adult Day Care, 2675 N. Lipkey Road, North Jackson, for the replacement of carpeting in the dining area.

Election to be resolved

LISBON — The Columbiana County Board of Elections will meet — and act — several times next week to resolve the at-large race for Salem City Council.

The board of elections will have a special meeting at 1 p.m. Monday at the board office at 41 N. Park Ave.

The board will decide on 14 provisional ballots, which were cast by people who recently moved.

Workers will then recount the ballots.

The final results will not be released until 8:30 a.m. May 21.

At-large candidates included incumbent Atty. Bret Apple, who had 304 votes; newcomer Randall Colian, 252; incumbent Clyde Brown, 214; and Atty. Earl A Schory II, 210.

Letter carrier food drive

CANFIELD — The National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 385 said the total of food collected May 9 in the 17th annual Letter Carrier Food Drive was 188,600 pounds.

The food was distributed to various food pantries and agencies in the tri-county area.

Memorial Day service

HOWLAND — Shepherd of the Valley, 4100 North River Road, will have a Memorial Day service at 3:30 p.m. May 21.

The Trumbull County American Legion Honor Guard will post the colors, and Col. Robert Mangold, U.S. Army (Retired), will conduct “The Four Chaplains” service. The four chaplains, Lt. George L. Fox, Lt. Alexander D. Goode, Lt. John P. Washington and Lt. Clark V. Poling, gave their life jackets to four others when their ship, the USTA Dorchester, sank after being torpedoed by a German submarine. They were last seen linked arm in arm, when their ship sank.
