Mooney’s Spahija advances in Division II tennis
BOARDMAN — Luka Spahija of Cardinal Mooney won three matches and has qualified for the Division II district boys tennis tournament.
The other three qualifiers will be decided on Saturday at the sectional tournament at the Boardman High School courts.
Two of the remaining three seeds remained alive through Wenesday’s play.
No. 1 seed Brad Brocker will play Jacob Seckman of Ravenna in a quarterfinal-round match after winning two matches in convincing fashion. Brocker did not lose a game in either match.
No. 2 seed Michael Fredericka of Warren JFK also won two matches to advance, dropping just one game in the process.
Fredericka will play Mike Rotar of Mooney in a quarterfinal-round match, with the winner paired against Spahija in the semifinals.
The remaining quarterfinal will match Chance Young of West Branch against Mooney’s Matt Higham. Both are unseeded.
Higham upset No. 4 seed Kelsey Harper of Ashtabula Sts. John & Paul, 6-3, 6-4, in second-round match.
In doubles, all four district qualifiers have been determined. They will play Saturday for district seeding.
The No. 1 seeds, Anthony Rosselli and Kenny Duncan of Poland, won three matches and will play No. 4 seeds Mark Pelini and John Critell of Mooney.
The other semifinal will match Lakeview’s Alex Dager and Zach McDivitt against Poland’s Stu Duchek and Alex Tadla, the No. 2 seeds.
Dager and McDivitt upset No. 3 seeds Greg DiRienzo and Vince Cicchi of Mooney, 7-6, 5-7, 6-4, in the quarterfinals.
