Kucek will attend Southern Union St.

CANFIELD — Canfield High School senior Jake Kucek will continue his baseball career at Southern Union State College in Alabama.

Kucek was also the punter on the Canfield football team last fall.

He plays catcher and pitches for the Cardinals.

As a sophomore, Kucek was the winning pitcher in the school’s 2007 Div. II state title game.

This season he’s batting .407 and has a 2.33 ERA for the Cardinals (23-4, 17-1-2 All-American Conference Red Division.

Softball teams raise $1,300

LISBON — The Cures for Cancer Softball Fund-raiser on April 25 at the Lisbon Softball Complex raised $1,300.

Teams participating were the Howland, Hubbard, Lisbon and Ursuline varsity teams. Donations were made to Hospice of the Valley and the American Cancer Society.

Pasquine picked MVP in PAC baseball league

WASHINGTON, Pa. — Junior outfielder/pitcher Jim Pasquine of Washington & Jefferson was selected the most valuable player in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.

Pasquine is a graduate of Poland High School.

On the league’s all-star first team are senior John Izzo of Westminster and New Castle Union at first base and pitcher Josh Tedesco of Thiel (Campbell, Ursuline High).

On the second team are junior pitcher Dave Diyorio (Thiel, Austintown Fitch) and freshman pitcher Justin Prejsnar (New Castle).

Slippery Rock track

INDIANAPOLIS — Eight women from the Slippery Rock Univ. track team will compete at the Div. II national championships meet in San Antonio over Memorial Day weekend.

Representing The Rock will be Lacey Cochran, Tiffany Tedesco, Amanda Seigworth, Allison Smith, Whitney Hendershot, Jenn Harpp, Laura Mucho and Jaime Wright.

Mount Union football adds Bates, others

ALLIANCE — West Branch High School senior Eric Bates has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this fall.

Bates (6-0, 180-pound), a four-year letter-winning wide receiver, made all-conference and all-district.

He was a team captain and won the team award for most outstanding offensive back.

Other Mount Union recruits include Ridgewood High’s Zach Queen (defensive tackle); Akron Manchester linebacker Kory Hull; and Galion High safety Alex Nicholls.

In addition, the Purple Raiders have added Tri-Valley tight end Ross Clayton; Woodridge High receiver Joshua Chadima; and Geneva (NY) High’s receiver Jasper Collins.

Correction

Doug Merrill is the head baseball coach at Bowling Green High School, not Bowling Green State University. Merrill will be the keynote speaker at Friday’s “Fighting the Demons” workshop at YSU.

SV Junior Track

YOUNGSTOWN — Andreyonna Baldridge won the high jump, the 100 meter hurdles and the 200 meter hurdles to lead the Warren Middle girls to the championship of the Steel Valley Junior Track Meet.

Warren Middle scored 124.5 points and Eagle Heights was second with 84.

In the boys action, Warren Middle posted 113.833 points to out-distance P. Ross Berry with 111.5. Tryell Green of P. Ross Berry won the long jump and the 400 meters.

Hawks under budget

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa says the football team’s January trip to the Outback Bowl in Tampa came under budget.

Iowa was given $1.65 million for trip expenses, which came out of the payout the bowl provides each school. A report distributed Tuesday at a meeting of the university’s President’s Committee on Athletic says Iowa spent just more than $1.5 million.

Iowa sold more than 14,000 tickets to the game through its ticket office. It also assumed the expense for more than 3,600 tickets.

Suspension upheld

LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission has decided to uphold a hearing officer’s recommendation to suspend a veterinarian accused of possessing banned medication.
