Some details about the Cuyahoga River:

The river: The Cuyahoga River in Northeast Ohio was designated one of the most polluted in the area of the Great Lakes.

Why: For years, industrial waste and sewage poured into the river. Oil and debris on the river caught fire in Cleveland in June 1969.

What’s new: Fish species have returned. A regional clean-water group and state environmental officials say the river from Akron to Cleveland is close to meeting federal clean-water standards.
