NEW MIDDLETOWN — Bids were opened for a dump truck and a drainage project when New Middletown Council met Monday.

Bidders for a new dump truck with a snowplow and spreader included: Donnell Ford, Boardman, $49,355; Welsh Motors, New Springfield (three bids), $52,561, $53,318 and $53,915; Classic Ford, Mentor, $56,000; VanDeven Chevy, no address available, $56,742; and Frederick Dodge, Boardman, $58,978.

No contract could be awarded because of lack of a quorum. Members Dan Santangelo and Anthony Didio did not attend the meeting, leaving only four council members. Five are required for a quorum.

A contract will be awarded at a special meeting set for 6 p.m. May 19 at the Village Administration Building.

Council members also opened bids for Phase 4 of the Stacey Drive Drainage Project.

Bidders were: Rudzik Excavating, Struthers, $84,346; Marucci and Gaffney Excavating, Youngstown, $78,295; Trumbull Contracting Corp., Cortland, $76,769; R.T. Vernal Paving, North Lima, $89,858; Pro Quality Excavating, Campbell, $57,423; and Foust Construction, Girard, $56,597. Dave Bakalar of Thomas Fok and Associates, the village engineers, will study the bids and make a recommendation.

Two residents objected to council’s proposed ordinance to limit the size and the length of time that motor homes, boats and other recreational vehicles can be parked outside a garage.

Roger Sherman said he checked with the police chief at the time before spreading tons of gravel in his yard to make a parking place for his motor home. He said he cannot afford to build a garage for it and believes it is unfair to require him to do so now.

Frank Ranelli agreed, stating that no one has ever complained about his recreational vehicle and said it would be expensive to rent storage space.

The ordinance has been prepared but has not yet passed any readings by council. Council members said a public hearing on the proposed ordinance will be announced.

And Police Chief Vince D’Egidio announced that the annual Memorial Day parade is set for May 25, with lineup at 9 a.m. at Springfield Local High School.

The parade will start at 9:30 a.m. A Memorial Day service will be at 10 a.m. at Springfield Elementary School.
