BMW Open
MUNICH — Tomas Berdych rallied from four points down in the decisive tiebreaker to beat Mikhail Youzhny 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (5) in the final of the BMW Open for his first title of the year. The fourth-seeded Czech squandered a 4-1 lead in the third set and wasted three match points before falling behind 4-0 and 5-1 in the tiebreaker. But Youzhny’s serve then deserted him and he made a string of errors to allow Berdych back into the match. Berdych then won six straight points to win the match. For Youzhny it was his second final loss at the Munich clay-court tournament. Berdych didn’t waste his fourth match point, converting it with a smash at the net to win his fifth career title.
Berdych had not made a final since winning the Tokyo tournament in October.
Madrid Open
MADRID — Jelena Jankovic beat Nuria Llagostera of Spain 6-2, 6-1 to reach the second round of the Madrid Open, a joint ATP and WTA Tour tournament. Agnes Szavay of Hungary upset 12th-seeded Flavia Pennetta of Italy 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-2 in the first round of the clay court event at Madrid’s new “Magic Box” tennis center. On the men’s side in the first round, 16th-seeded Tommy Robredo rallied to defeat Nicolas Kiefer of Germany 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, and Spanish wild card Juan Carlos Ferrero beat Igor Kunitsyn of Russia 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
Serbia Open
BELGRADE, Serbia — Top-seeded Novak Djokovic beat unheralded Lukasz Kubot of Poland 6-3, 7-6 (0) in the Serbia Open final to win the first ATP Tour tournament held in his home country. Djokovic played in his fourth straight final after being runner-up in Miami, Monte Carlo and Rome. It was his 13th career title. “Although this is not one of the biggest tournament I had won, it means the most to me,” Djokovic told some 7,000 spectators that packed a makeshift tennis stadium on the banks of the Danube River.
Kubot, who was in the draw as a lucky loser from qualifying after Steve Darcis of Belgium withdrew because of a shoulder injury, was the first Pole to reach an ATP final since Wojtek Fibak in 1983 at Basel. “I have one of my best memories here in Serbia, and hope to be back next year,” Kubot said.
Estoril Open
OEIRAS, Portugal — James Blake of the United States lost to Albert Montanes 5-7, 7-6 (6), 6-0 in the final of the Estoril Open. Blake was trying to become the first American to win an ATP title on European clay since Andy Roddick in 2003 at St. Poelten, Austria.
Blake had defeated Nikolay Davydenko 6-7 (3), 7-6 (2), 6-3 in the semifinal Sunday just hours before the final. The semifinal was suspended Saturday because of darkness with Blake leading 4-2 in the second set. In the final, the fourth-seed Blake broke for the first time in the 12th game of the first set. Montanes, who defeated Paul Capdeville 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinal Saturday, broke Blake at love in the seventh game of the second set. Blake immediately broke back and then wasted two match points in the 10th game before losing in the tiebreaker. In the third, Blake lost all three of his service games. Blake earned his seventh straight win over the second-seeded Davydenko, who was playing his fifth tournament of the year after a two-month layoff because of a heel injury. Three of the opening five games produced breaks of serve, with Davydenko winning two before Blake comfortably won the tiebreaker. Blake broke in the fourth game of the deciding set, becoming the first American since Todd Martin in 1999 to reach the Estoril final.
