YSU introduces class of scholars

Volunteerism is required for the scholarship.

STAFF REPORT

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State University introduced the 17th class of the Leslie H. Cochran University Scholars, YSU’s most prestigious academic scholarship.

This year’s class of 40 scholars consists of students from high schools in Maryland, Minnesota, Ohio and Pennsylvania and includes 16 valedictorians.

The University Scholars award, named after a former YSU president, recognizes outstanding academic achievement with a scholarship that covers bulk-rate tuition and room and board as well as a $360 book voucher.

The scholarship is renewable for four years as long as the student maintains yearly program requirements of 60 hours of volunteerism, an overall 3.5 grade-point average, active participation in the University Honors Program and completion of extracurricular activities.

The new scholars were introduced by YSU President David C. Sweet during a luncheon Friday for the scholars and their families in Kilcawley Center.
