Students to be named Young Scholars

STAFF REPORT

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown City School District is one of nine urban public-school districts that work in collaboration with the Ohio State University’s Young Scholars Program.

The program annually inducts about a dozen sixth-grade students as pre-young scholars at the same time it recognizes seniors graduating from the program.

This year’s induction of sixth-graders and recognition of 12th-graders will take place about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday near the beginning of the regular school board meeting, Room 205 at the board of education office, 20 W. Wood St.

Operating out of OSU’s Office of Minority Affairs, the Young Scholars Program strives to increase the number of black, Appalachian, Latino and American Indian students pursuing a college degree.

The formal induction from pre-young scholar to young scholar takes place in ninth grade and they have the opportunity for a financial-aid package based on need and guaranteed admission to OSU if they maintain a 3.0 grade-point average as well as fulfill certain curriculum and program activity requirements throughout high school.
