Marvel E. Flint awards to be bestowed at Avion
CANFIELD — The second annual Marvel E. Flint Scholar Awards Dinner will begin at 4 p.m. May 17 at Avion on the Water Banquet Center, 2177 Western Reserve Road. The Flint scholarship fund has been established to honor the outstanding accomplishments of students in the Valley and raise funds to provide scholarships for disadvantaged youths.
The late Marvel E. Flint was born and educated in Youngstown, where she attended church. She lived in Hermitage, Pa., with her husband, Paul G. Flint, until her death in January 2008. Mrs. Flint encouraged the academic success of young people throughout the Mahoning and Shenango valleys.
Established fund
Mrs. Flint’s husband, his family and Dr. Morris W. Lee, pastor of Third Baptist Church, have established the scholarship fund in her name to continue her work of providing educational support and cultural enrichment for young people.
This year the Flint Scholarship Fund will award scholarships to five students in pursuit of higher education. The graduating high school senior recipients are Keeley Black, Sharon High School; Jackson Jones, Farrell High School; Carinda Mickens, Youngstown Christian School; and Karlee Hoffman, West Middlesex High School. Meysha Harville, a Youngstown State University sophomore, will also receive a scholarship.
The fund will honor the accomplishments of three of Youngstown City Schools’ best students. David Bresko, Victor Cardarelli and Derrick High are seniors at Youngstown Early College, a high school operated by Youngstown Schools and located on the campus of YSU. These students will graduate in May with high school diplomas and more than 45 college semester hours. Derrick High has earned enough credits to be awarded an associate degree from YSU at its May commencement.
