Baseball Oldtimers

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Baseball Oldtimers Association will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday at Kramer Field at 2:30 p.m.

Rock women repeat

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock Univ. women’s track and field team won its fourth consecutive Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship.

The Rock led wire-to-wire, taking the lead after the opening event and never gave back the advantage.

The Rock scored 179 points, with Shippensburg a distant second at 162.50. Lock Haven (116), Indiana (Pa.) (94.50) and East Stroudsburg (79.50) rounded out the top-five.

Rock men fifth

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock Univ. men’s track and field team placed fifth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Outdoor championships at Millersville University.

Shippensburg claimed the team title with 143.50 points and East Stroudsburg placing second at 137 points.

Lock Haven (111), Indiana (Pa.) (79) and The Rock (75) rounded out the top-five.

Five records set

BOARDMAN — The Boardman High girls set five school records at the Spartan Relays Saturday.

In the 1600-meter medley relay, the Spartans ran a record 4:25.9.

Brittany Tucker, Samara Sutton, Becca Muntean and Lauren Agnew broke the old mark of 4:48.3 set in 2008 by Tucker, Sutton, Heather Hughes and Lauren DeLuca.

Erin Brown, Valerie Hood and Angela Burnett turned in a 331-4 in the discus relay to snap the 329-9 set in 1996 by Samantha Blewitt, Adriane Blewitt and Sandy Mickholtzick.

A new long jump relay mark of 47-11 was established by Nicole Biagetti, Sutton and Tucker, erasing the 45-11‚Ñ2 they set in 2008.

The new pole vault relay distance of 25-6 was posted by Ashlee Frazzini, Karlie Ligore and Jen Bresnahan.

That broke the old mark of 24-0 set in 2007 by Carrie Mavrikis, Frazzini and Lea Byers.

Grand Rapids 25K

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Kenyan Isaack Kimaiyo edged Dan Browne to win the 32nd Annual Fifth Third River Bank Run in Grand Rapids.

Kimaiyo’s time of 1 hour, 15 minutes, 36.14 seconds in Saturday’s 25 kilometer race beat out Browne, who finished about 20 seconds later in 1:15:56.81. Browne is from Oregon, but now lives in Chula Vista, Calif.

Linus Maiyo, of Royersford, Pa., was third in 1:16:00.07.

Dad Vail Regatta

PHILADELPHIA — Michigan used a favorable current to win the school’s second Richard O’Brien trophy and end a two-year run by Big Ten rival Purdue on Saturday at the 71st Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River.

The Wolverines won the men’s varsity heavyweight 8 in 5:54.4 and tied with Delaware for most points in the men’s races with 20.

Purdue, which won in 2007 and 2008, came in second in 5:57.694. In the women’s division, Grand Valley won its first Evelyn Bergman Trophy in 6:41.2. Buffalo and hometown favorite St. Joseph’s finished second and third respectively and Buffalo had the most points in women’s races with 30.

Hollywood Park feature

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Giant Gem edged Cavanal by a nose in the $50,000 feature race at Hollywood Park.

Ridden by Alex Solis, the 4-year-old Giant Gem ran a mile in 1:34.54, and paid $9, $5.20 and $3.20 for his second victory in five starts.

Cavanal returned $5.80 and $3.80, and Woodland Flood paid $3.80 to show.

Giant Gem earned $30,000 to boost his earnings to $73,520.

Belmont’s Peter Pan

NEW YORK — Charitable Man got back into the 3-year-old picture Saturday, pulling away to a 33‚Ñ4-length win in the $200,000 Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont Park.

It was the third win in four starts for the colt trained by Kiaran McLaughlin. Unbeaten in two races last year, including the Futurity Stakes at Belmont, Charitable Man finished seventh in his season debut in the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland.

Next stop could be the Belmont Stakes on June 6.

“He is definitely bred to get a mile and a half and he likes this track and he did it the right way today, so we’ll look at it,” McLaughlin said of the final leg of the Triple Crown.

Monmouth Park opens

OCEANPORT, N.J. — Acting Zippy drew off in the deep stretch to win the $70,000 Decathlon Stakes by 13‚Ñ4 lengths as Monmouth Park opened its 94-day meet on Saturday.

Trained by William D. Bennett and ridden by Eddie Castro, the 3-year-old gelding covered the six furlongs on a fast track in 1:081‚Ñ5 and returned $7.80, $3.20 and $2.60. It was Castro’s third win of the day.

Daley wins gold

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — British teenager Thomas Daley won gold in the men’s platform final with 554.90 points at the USA Diving Grand Prix on Saturday.

The 14-year-old scored perfect 10s from the seven judges on his fifth dive — a backward 31‚Ñ2 tuck with a 3.3 degree of difficulty.

Sascha Klein of Germany took silver with 552.15 points and Zhou Luxin of China, who won the silver medal in platform at the Beijing Games, was third with 549.70 points.

Wariner wins 400 at Osaka Grand Prix

OSAKA, Japan — Olympic medalist Jeremy Wariner has won the men’s 400 meters on Saturday at the Osaka Grand Prix. The American clocked a time of 44.69 to finish comfortably ahead of Japan’s Yuzo Kanemaru, who was second in 45.16. Australia’s Sean Wroe took third place with a time of 45.32.

Wariner, a three-time Olympic track gold medalist, was looking forward to defending his title at the world championships in Berlin in August. He took silver in the 400 in last year’s Beijing Olympics.

Armstrong’s squad 3rd

VENICE, Italy — Lance Armstrong was satisfied with the start of his first major race since winning his seventh consecutive Tour de France in 2005.

Armstrong’s Astana squad finished third in the team time trial Saturday to start the Giro d’Italia — cycling’s most important race after the Tour. Only two American-owned teams — Columbia-High Road and Garmin-Slipstream — were faster.
