Klein, Stillwagon honored by Army

YOUNGSTOWN — YSU baseball player Phil Klein and women’s golfer Brittany Stillwagon have been named U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Month.

Klein, a sophomore righthander, went 2-0 with a 3.45 earned-run average in four starts during April. He struck out 25 in 281‚Ñ3 innings in earning victories over Butler University April 5 and Cleveland State April 12.

Klein carries a 3.81 grade-point average as a finance major.

Stillwagon, a junior, finished second at the Horizon League Women’s Golf Championships to help the Penguins capture their second conference title.

She carded a three-round total of 241 with rounds of 84, 79 and 78.

An electrical engineering major, Stillwagon owns a 3.64 grade-point average, including a perfect 4.0 GPA during the fall 2008 semester.

MU’s Lucak named to academic team

DELAWARE — Mount Union College sophomore Alex Lucak was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV Softball Second Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Lucak, started all 44 games this season and was second on the team in hits (56) and homers (5) and third in batting average (.384), runs batted in (25) and doubles (10).

She was an All-Central Region first team selection and also named to the All-Ohio Athletic Conference team for a second straight year.

She has a 3.84 cumulative grade point average as an athletic training major.

Stephanie Zunic all-region pick

HIRAM — Stephanie Zunic, a senior shortstop for the Hiram College softball team from Canfield High, has been selected to the 2009 Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III All-Central Region Third Team.

Zunic helped Hiram to a record-setting 26 victories (26-14) and to their first-ever North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament championship last weekend at Denison in Granville. The Terriers beat Allegheny, 4-2, on Sunday in the meet final. Zunic had a single and RBI in the showdown.

Zunic ranks No. 1 on the team in runs scored (31) and doubles (17) and No. 2 on the team in batting average (.404 on 59-for-146), and RBIs (26).

Thiel advances

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Justin Scarpitti hit his ninth home run of the season to lead the Thiel baseball team past top-seeded Washington & Jefferson 8-6 and into the Presidents’ Athletic Conference championship game for the third consecutive year.

Scarpitti led Thiel with four RBIs and was one of four Tomcats to score two runs on the day.

Softball title

STRUTHERS — When the Struthers High School softball team defeated Liberty on Thursday, the Wildcats clinched the AAC white tier championship.

Raiders post victory

GAMBIER — Mount Union College scored its first-ever NCAA Tournament win, 5-0, against Lebanon Valley (PA) College in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championship Friday.

The Purple Raiders will play No. 7 in the nation and regional hostKenyon College in second round today at 2 p.m.

Mount Union (21-4) has won 16-straight matches.

National qualifiers

MEADVILLE, Pa. — At the Gator Invitational, the Thiel College men’s 4x400-meter relay team moved the number of Tomcat provisional national qualifiers to 14 athletes.

The indoor all-America group of Dorran Coley, Alex Eaton, Ethan Rowe and Deighton Williams raced to a second place finish and a school record time of 3:15.38, joining ten other Thiel College outdoor performers who provisionally qualified for nationals.

Greenville, Pa. native Cara Riffe (Reynolds) improved her qualifying mark with a first place and school record time of 56.4 in the 400-meter dash. Riffe’s 400-meter time ranks is currently the seventh fastest time in the nation.
