Thompson wins gymnastics award
AMES, Iowa — Jasmine Thompson, a senior member of the Iowa State University gymnastics team from McDonald High, was presented the Janet Anson ‘Key’ Gymnast of the Year award at the Cyclones’ banquet last weekend.
The award is awarded to Iowa State’s most outstanding gymnast and is named after Anson, an eight-time All-America recipient and current volunteer assistant coach with the Cyclones.
Thompson participated in the all-around for every Iowa State meet in 2009, and captured the Big 12 Conference co-championship in the beam event, and was named to the All-Big 12 Championship beam team.
She also was picked to the All-Big 12 floor exercise team, and named to the Academic All-Big 12 first team for the third straight year.
Lakeview’s Graham due for honor
CORTLAND — The Northeastern Ohio Chapter of the National Football Foundation will be presenting a Scholar-Athlete Award to Michael Graham, a senior at Lakeview High School.
Graham will be recognized at the NEO chapter banquet in Westlake on May 11. Michael will receive his award from Ohio State’s Jim Tressel.
He is currently ranked No.1 in his class with a grade-point- average of 4.0. Michael will attend NEOUCOM this summer.
McGowan Atlantic 10 choice in tennis
PITTSBURGH — Rachel McGowan, a junior on the Duquesne University tennis team from Canfield High, was named Atlantic 10 Conference Second Team along with teammates Rebecca Poole, a senior, and Zena Williams, a sophomore.
McGowan, playing at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles, led Duquesne in wins again this season with 35 — 15 in singles and 20 in doubles.

BOARDMAN — Allison Brager set Boardman High’s girls pole vault record at the 2003 state track meet. An incorrect year was listed in a story in Thursday’s edition.
Two Niles football players commit
ALLIANCE — Two Niles High senior football standouts — running back Zakary Stanton and quarterback Morgan Brogdon-Hill — have committed to attend Mount Union College and resume their football careers.
Stanton was Niles’ leading rusher and an All-American Conference selection under coach Brad Yeager.
The son of Renee and Mark Stanton of Niles, Zakary plans to study athletic training.
Brogdon-Hill, the son of Sarah and Marcus Hill of Niles, plans to study business.

HARTFORD — Sharon Speedway will feature Star Trek Night to kick off the season on Saturday.
Sprints, E-Mods, Pro Stocks and Limited Sprints will be in action. Racing starts at 6 p.m.

Renegades to open
COLUMBIANA — The Crestview Renegades minor league football team, will start its inaugural season on May 16 at Crestview High School at 7 p.m.
The Renegades will play division rival Pittsburgh Blue Devils. As members of the Grassroots Football League, the Renegades consist of local ex-high school and college athletes from the Mahoning Valley. Tickets are $6 for general admission and $7 chairback.
