Dance and fundraiser to help Girard graduate
GIRARD — A dance and fundraising event in honor of 2008 Girard High School graduate Jordon Baer will be from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the Girard Eagles on Wilson Avenue.
Baer was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, a rare form of heart-muscle disease, and is in need of a heart transplant.
Silent and Chinese auctions are planned during the dance and also during the day from 1 to 5 p.m. Featured items include merchandise from the Pittsburgh Steelers, Kelly Pavlik, Ohio State University, Youngstown State University, jewelry, golf packages, gift certificates and more.
Reporter to be speaker
SALEM — A program, “Memories of 50 years as a Newspaper Reporter,” will be presented by Salem resident Richard Wootten at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Salem Historical Society, 208 S. Broadway St. Wootten, now retired, spent nearly 50 years writing for a wire service, newspapers and magazines on subjects that included crime, politics and court trials.
He also was an arts and entertainment writer for the Cleveland Press. He has interviewed actors John Wayne and Judy Garland and composers Darius Milhaud and Leonard Bernstein. While at the Press, he was nominated in 1981 for a Pulitzer Prize in the public-service category. He also serves as president and founder of the Burchfield Homestead Society in Salem.
Planned water shutoff
YOUNGSTOWN — As part of a waterline project, Industrial Road near Baxter Avenue will be without water from 4 to about 9 p.m. today.
Flags on vets’ graves
VIENNA — AMVETS Post 290 will put flags on veterans’ graves at 10 a.m. May 16 at Crown Hill Burial Park, 3966 Sharon Road. Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, individuals and organizations are welcome to help. Rain date will be May 23.
Resurfacing planned
LISBON — Ohio Department of Transportation and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources will begin work Monday to resurface the parking lot and boat-launch ramp in the Zepernick Wildlife Area in western Columbiana County. State Route 172 bisects the area.
The parking lot and boat-launch ramp will be closed to the public Monday through May 14. Both will be reopened to the public May 15.
The contractor for the $29,913 project is Joseph A. Jeffries Co. Inc., Louisville, Ohio.

AUSTINTOWN — Ohio Connections Academy will have an information session concerning the 2009-10 school year at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Country Inn and Suites, 5570 Interstate Blvd.
Ohio Connections Academy (OCA) is offering parents in the Youngstown area the chance to learn more about this virtual public school. Session participants will explore OCA’s individualized learning approach, its curriculum, the technology-enhanced learning environment and the enrollment process.
The school opened in the fall of 2003 and serves more than 1,600 Ohio students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
