Warren JFK accepts Timko’s resignation
WARREN — The resignation of Warren JFK boys basketball coach Bruce Timko was accepted by the school on Wednesday.
A search process for a replacement for the 2009-2010 season will begin immediately.
Another title bout for judge Tom Miller
LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Tom Miller of Mineral Ridge was a judge last Saturday for the WBC super featherweight championship.
World champion Humberto Soto of Mexico successfully defended his title by defeating Benoit Gaudet of Canada. It was the 48-year-old Miller’s 48th world title bout and, including regional title matches, his 62nd overall.
His next assignments include the K.O. Drugs High School boxing tournament on May 15 and the International Boxing Federation judges convention, to be held in Panama City, Panama, May 27-30.
Three Boardman track records fall
BOARDMAN — Three Boardman High track and field athletes set school records in a dual meet with Austintown Fitch on Tuesday.
In the boys meet, Caleb Matthews set a school record in the long jump with a distance of 23-1 1/2, breaking the old mark of 22-4, set in 1938 by Neil Williams.
Senior Samara Sutton broke the school record in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 6 1/2 inches, breaking the old mark of 17-4 1/2, set by Autumn Parrish in the 2005 regional meet.
Senior Ashlee Frazzini set a record in the pole vault with a height of 10-8 1/2, breaking Allison Brager’s record of 10-8 at the 2005 state meet.
Chad Butcher is Mount-bound
ALLIANCE — —West Branch High School senior Chad Butcher has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this fall.
Butcher, a 6-2, 175-pound wide receiver, was an all-conference, all-district, all-county selection and team captain for coach Bob Altenhof at West Branch.
During high school, Butcher caught 104 passes for 1,541 yards and 15 touchdowns.
Butcher, who plans to study sport business, is the son of Mike and Darla Butcher of Salem.
Mount Union went 15-0 last season and claimed its 10th NCAA Division III National Championship. Larry Kehres begins his 35th season at Mount Union in 2009 and 24th as head football coach with a 275-21-3 record. The Purple Raiders open the 2009 season Saturday, Sept. 5 at 4 p.m. at St. John Fisher College in Pittsford, NY.
Howland’s Cash headed to MUC
ALLIANCE — Howland High School senior Matthew John Cash has committed to attend Mount Union College and compete on the football team this fall.
Cash, a 6-2, 310-pound lineman, is a four-year letterwinner for coach Dick Angle at Warren Howland High School.
Cash is the son of Kenneth and Kimberly Cash of Warren. Matthew John plans to study pre-med.
Correction
YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown Christian’s baseball victory over East at Pemberton-Donnell Park on Tuesday was 21-6. The score was incorrectly given as 21-0 in Wednesday’s paper.
Women’s bowling tournament set
YOUNGSTOWN — Entries are now available at all bowling centers for the Youngstown-Salem USBC Women’s Bowling Association’s 66th city tournament.
Four-women teams will compete in singles, doubles and team categories at Holiday Bowl. Association members may bowl more than once in the various events.
Entry fee is $16 per event. The tournament runs May 11-22. Paid entries close on May 8.
