STAFF REPORT

POLAND — The township police and Mahoning County Sheriff’s Department are awaiting word from the county coroner’s office today on a shooting in which two people died.

Township police were called to a residence in the 6000 block of Styme Road shortly before 6 p.m., but they gave few details Wednesday night.

A coroner’s office report is expected today.

Authorities developed a staging area at a U.S. Route 224 restaurant shortly after the shooting to begin the investigation and answer questions from reporters.

A township officer didn’t provide details, pending notification of next of kin.

Mahoning County Coroner David Kennedy provided no information, except to say one of his investigators was working with police at the scene to gather the information. Kennedy said a public statement would be released this morning.

Assisting at the scene was the Western Reserve Joint Fire District, which consists of firefighters from the village and township.

Police had taped off the perimeter around the two-story home. Officers did not allow reporters or photographers to get too close to the house, sending them back to the staging area to await information.

Styme Road is a small street that runs off Route 224 near the Ohio-Pennsylvania line. Only one business and 27 residences are on the road.

According to Vindicator files, the last shooting in the township that resulted in a death was in December 2007, when a young man accidentally shot an 18-year-old woman in her family’s Algonquin Drive residence.

The girl was a Poland Seminary High School graduate and a freshman at Ohio State University.

The man was charged with negligent homicide in Struthers Municipal Court. He pleaded no contest in May 2008 and was found guilty. He was sentenced to 60 days in Struthers jail, to be served on 40 consecutive weekends.

He was fined $1,000 plus court costs; ordered to perform 96 hours of community service; and placed on three years’ probation.
