YOUNGSTOWN — Former Youngstown State kicker Brian Palmer is taking part in a two-day tryout for the Mahoning Valley Thunder.
“I’m going to start bringing in guys to take a look, like the kicker we have today,” Thunder coach Brennen Booth said of the former Penguin from Mineral Ridge, who was present with the team at the Covelli Centre on Tuesday.
“It’s not that we’re replacing anybody, but I’ve got to have a backup plan in case someone gets hurt because we are a little thin,” said Booth.
Derek Schorejs has been the team’s regular kicker this season.
The Thunder, however, did bring in a new player: defensive back Darrell Carlton, who was cut by Wilkes-Barre/Scranton after playing with the Pioneers the first four games this spring.
“We hope he can help back there with some of the confusion,” Booth said of the defensive backfield situation. Carlton was with the Thunder for a few games in 2007.
Mahoning Valley also lost TE/FB Shawn Donaldson, who decided to leave football.
“He said his heart wasn’t in it,” Booth said of the former Kent State player. “That’s understandable because I went through the same thing when I stopped playing. It’s unfortunate because he’s a good player. He had good chemistry with the team.”
