Trio nominated for prep all-star game

WHARTON, N.J. — Three local high school football players are among 18 Ohio athletes who have been nominated for consideration to play in the 10th anniversary of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

Featuring the nation’s top prep football players, the 2010 U.S. Army All-American Bowl will be played on January 9, 2010, at 1 p.m. in San Antonio’s Alamodome.

Among the Ohio nominees who will be vying for inclusion as part of this year’s U.S. Army All-American Bowl are O’Neal Brown, DL of Warren Harding; J.T. Moore, DL of Boardman High; and Jamel Turner, DL of Ursuline High.

Murray selected for national golf tourney

INDIANAPOLIS — Mount Union College sophomore Lucas Murray has been selected to compete at the NCAA Div. III Men’s Golf Championship May 13-16, at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Murray is one of five individual players joining 36 teams that make up the 185 participants in the tournament.

This season, Murray has 11 top-five finishes in the 12 events he played with a stroke average of 72.1.

Bethany earns ECAC softball invitation

BETHANY, W. Va. – After finishing in second place in the PAC during the regular season and the conference tournament, the Bethany softball team was rewarded with a bid to the ECAC South Region Tournament, which will begin Wednesday with a preliminary round game

The Bison (23-19) earned the third-seed in the five-team tournament and advance directly to Saturday to play the #2 seed Centenary (N.J.) College (24-12) at 12 p.m. Juniata (24-13) was tabbed as the top seed and will host the tournament over the weekend.

Misericordia (Pa.) Univ. (25-14) is the fourth seed and will host fifth-seeded Frostburg St. (Md.) Univ. (26-17) Wednesday in a first round game at 4 p.m.

Pitch, Hit & Run

NILES — The Mahoning Valley Scrappers put on a Pitch, Hit & Run competition Saturday and four age-group champions were crowned.

Jordan Trowers (age 7-8), R.J. Smith (9-10), Michael Massucci (11-12) and Zachary Conley (13-14) have qualified to compete at the Kent sectional on May 23.

CWE at The Wedge

AUSTINTOWN — Ryan Mitchell won an eight-man Gauntlet Match at the CWE Path of Destruction2 show held at The Wedge.

In other action, Moondog Scrap earned his first win over Hobo Joe while Tuff Tina defeated Angel Dust and the LA Gunz beat the team of Shawn Blaze and Marcus Knight.

Also, Ryan Burke defeated Raymond Rowe and the Franchise Players became the new CWE tag team champions by defeating the Straight Jacket Mafia, 2-1.

In other action, Facade and Petey Williams battled to a 15-minute time limit draw and Patrick Hayes was disqualified in a match against Ryan Mitchell.

Wolverines earn berth

GROVE CITY, Pa. — The Grove City College baseball team earned the fourth and final berth in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Championship Tournament by picking up a 12-8 victory over Bethany on Monday.

Grove City improved to 9-9 in the PAC with the win and will face top-seeded Washington & Jefferson Thursday at 3 p.m. in the semifinals of the PAC Tournament.

The Wolverines are the No. 4 seed in the tournament by virtue of a 2-1 head-to-head tiebreaker over Waynesburg, which also went 9-9 in the conference.

Basketball tournament

YOUNGSTOWN — A Gus Macker 3v3 basketball tournament will be held June 13 at the Covelli Centre, formerly the Chevrolet Centre.

Youngstown Christian School is the host of the event that begins at 8 a.m.
