Unbeaten streak hits eight with 1-1 tie
TORONTO — Chad Barrett scored in the 64th minute Saturday to give Toronto FC a 1-1 tie with Columbus that kept the MLS champion Crew winless.
Toronto (3-2-3) extended its unbeaten streak to three games despite some defensive lapses.
The Crew, who lost highly respected coach Sigi Schmid to the Seattle Sounders in the offseason, are now 0-2-5 — the worst start in Columbus’ 14-year history and the worst for a defending champion.
Columbus has still never lost to Toronto in eight meetings, winning three and drawing five. The two tied 1-1 in Ohio earlier this season.
Quail Hollow golf
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Zach Johnson had the slightest feeling of panic Saturday when he saw his 7-iron hug the left side of the 17th green, wondering for a moment if he would stumble for the second straight day along a three-hole stretch called the “Green Mile.”
Relief set in when he saw his ball on green grass, and the 12-foot birdie that followed made a world of difference.
Tiger Woods faltered on the final holes for the second straight with two bogeys. George McNeill did the same. And when a storm system cleared and the third round finally finished, Johnson had a two-shot lead at the Quail Hollow Championship.
Nassau County Stakes
NEW YORK — Flashing battled back in the mud Saturday, beating Saarlight by 11‚Ñ4 lengths in the $196,000 Nassau County Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Belmont Park.
In a virtual match race, those two battled every step of the seven-furlong race. Saarlight stole away by two lengths turning for home before Flashing, the early leader, came on strong to earn her third-straight win.
“When it looked like the other horse was trying to open up, I took my time and put her on the outside,” said jockey Javier Castellano. “When I did that, I think it was the key to the race — to go outside and let her run free.”

Russia beats US 4-1 at ice hockey worlds
BERN, Switzerland — Russia scored three power-play goals to beat the United States 4-1 in a second-round match at the ice hockey world championship on Saturday.
The U.S. took an early 1-0 lead, but took too many penalties as Russia rallied to make it 3-1 at the end of the first period.
Russia increased its lead on another power play early in the second period, and the U.S. couldn’t rally in the teams’ first meeting at the worlds in five years.
Defending champion Russia secured a spot in the quarterfinals as a top seed, having won Group E with 11 points with a game to spare.
The U.S. is second with seven points with one game to play.
