Dick Angle (football): He was a three-year letterwinner and starter for Ursuline, helping the Irish to an unbeaten season in 1963. After playing at the University of Missouri, his early coaching stops were at Leetonia, Campbell Memorial, Lakeview and Kennedy Catholic. He coached Ursuline from 1979-96 and has been the Howland High coach since 1998. His coaching record is 218-259-3.

Dana Balash (sports media): A longtime area sportscaster, he is now the area’s television sports dean, celebrating his 24th year at WFMJ Channel 21. In 2005, he received the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s “Sports Media Award.

Mark Calcagni (football): His brothers Jim and Ron also are Curbstone Hall of Famers. He earned three letters while playing for Chaney from 1978-80. A two-year starter at quarterback and the team, “Most Valuable Player” as a senior, he was an All-City Series, All-Northeastern Ohio and All-State selection in 1980 when he set the school single game passing record with 371 yards. He played for the University of Arkansas.

Jim Dodge (bowling): He started bowling at the age of 6 and made a name for himself in the area’s Junior Bowling League until the age of 18. In 1979, he won the local Bowling Proprietors Association All-American Youth Bowling Tournament Scratch Division, finishing third in the state of Ohio that same year. Overall, he is the architect of 35 300 games, and on eight occasions he threw three 11 consecutive strikes to finish with a 299 roll. Since 1999, he has 22 300 games, seven of his eight 299 games, a 298 roll to his credit and 19 800 sets.

John Geletka (contributor): A well-rounded athlete for the Campbell Memorial Red Devils, he was a member of Coach John Knapick’s grid teams that posted a combined 25-2-3 mark during the three seasons he played. A dentist, he’s also a sports agent who is President/CEO of Pro-Sport Management. He represented and negotiated the contracts of Bernie Kosar, Tom Cousineau and All-Pro Bruce Armstrong of the New England Patriots.

Bob Krizancic (basketball): A 1971 graduate of Girard High, he played three seasons for the Indians. He earned a scholarship to Youngstown State University where he lettered three times under tutelage of Dom Rosselli. A head varsity coach for nearly 30 years, he coached at his alma mater for 12 season (1980-81 to 1992-93), had 11 winning campaigns and posted a 194-109 overall mark. His Indians teams won 11 Sectional titles in a row, playing for the District crown on six occasions; winning four times. His ‘93 squad won the Division II State Championship. He also served as an assistant coach for two seasons for the Youngstown Pride (1991-92) of the now defunct World Basketball League.

Jack Loew (boxing): He played football while attending Mooney High, but it is better known for being boxer Kelly Pavlik’s trainer. A trainer/manager for more than 20 years, he is a past President of the former Youngstown Golden Gloves and also Amateur Boxing Trainers Association.

John Mang (special award): For the past four decades, he has been a fixture as a local football, basketball, baseball or softball official/referee, also serving as a commissioner or assistant commissioner for several of the area’s highest profile leagues. A baseball umpire for 37 years, he has served as a football referee for 34 years and a basketball official for 34 years. The former commissioner of the Tri-County League serves as assistant commissioner of both the Inter Tri-County League and Federal League.

Helen Mays (bowling): During the 1950s, she maintained one of the Top-10 averages in the city, her highest a 176 average with a High Series of 671 at Liberty Lanes in the Traveling League. Her highest game is a 266 while her first 600 set came at Gran Lanes. She was the YWBA City All Events Tournament Champion in 1956, won the ACRY Tournament Actual Singles life (in Buffalo, N.Y.) and the ACRY Tournament All Events (Ambridge, Pa.) crown in 1957 and 1958.

Jerry Olsavsky (football): Linebackers coach for Youngstown State University, the Chaney High graduate, who played for Pitt, also played 10 seasons in the National Football League, nine with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He played most of Super Bowl XXX, a 27-17 loss to Dallas.

George Repasky (baseball): The 1955 South High graduate played for the Cleveland Indians’ minor league teams for five seasons.

Bobby Tinkey (baseball): He is one of the best fielding defensive third baseman and first basemen ever to play Class B and Class AA baseball. A 1981 graduate of Fitch High, he also played basketball for the Falcons. In 1985, he was drafted in the sixth round of the Annual Major League Baseball Amateur Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers, later playing in the Minnesota Twins organization as well. In 1987, as a member of the Kenosha Twins, he helped that entry to the Midwest League title as well.

Denny Barrett (sports media): He was a teacher, coach and sports announcer for 23 years until his death in 1975.

Harry Meshel (contributor): He was a state senator from 1971-93 and is a member of the Youngstown State University Board of Trustees.

J. Robert McClaran (contributor): He is a 1938 graduate of South High where he lettered in football. He later was a high school basketball official.
