Peace officer memorial service May 21

YOUNGSTOWN — The annual fallen officers police memorial services will be at 10 a.m. May 21 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel on Via Mount Carmel.

The event is being hosted by the Youngstown Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 28, the Mahoning County deputies’ FOP Lodge 141 and Youngstown State University’s FOP.

The families of all fallen officers in the Mahoning Valley are invited to attend.

Local police departments are sending cruisers to participate in a motorcade that leaves Lot D at the Covelli Centre, formerly known as the Chevrolet Centre. The cruisers are to be at the center’s lot at 9 a.m. May 21. After the motorcade is organized, the traditional procession will arrive at the church at 10 a.m.

The memorial will honor the 24 officers in Mahoning County killed in the line of duty dating back to 1891. The last officer killed in the line of duty was Michael T. Hartzell of the Youngstown police department on April 29, 2003.
