Hubbard’s Lias makes his choice

HUBBARD — Robbie Lias, a two-way starter for the playoff-qualifying Hubbard Eagles signed a letter-of-intent to continue his football career at Notre Dame College.

Lias was a two-year letterwinner for coach Brian Hoffman who earned all-district and all-league honors and was chosen as the recipient of the Iron Man Award this season for football.

He also was a four-year letterman in wrestling, earned first-team E.O.W.L. and first-team all-conference.

Lias capped his wrestling career by placing fifth at the state wrestling championships.

Ursuline inductees take place in hall

YOUNGSTOWN — The Ursuline High School Hall of Fame inducted nine members Thursday night at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Hall.

New members are: John A. Carter (football, 1984); Jeana Fusillo Cook (basketball, 1994); Sean Durkin (coaching, 1988); Kevin McGuire (honorary, 1976); Mark Myers (football, 1991); Andy Naples (football, 1970); Jeff Patrone (basketball, 1989); Jerome Payne (track, 1989) and Eric Wolford (football, 1989).

Champ honored

CLEVELAND — WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik and his trainer, Jack Loew, were honored at a dinner recently to benefit the Lake Erie Association of USA Boxing.

The event was held at Sterle’s Restaurant on East 55th St.

As an amateur, Pavlik was represented by the Lake Erie Association, the governing body for amateur boxing in the northeastern part of Ohio.

Football combine

GIRARD — The National Prep Gridiron Combine will conduct a high school football combine at the Creekside Golf Dome, May 23 at noon.

The combine is open to any high school football player in grades 9-11 interested in showcasing their talents and gaining exposure. The National Prep Gridiron Combine was founded by former All-American at North Carolina and 10-year NFL veteran linebacker Brian Simmons.

The Golf Dome is at 1300 N. State St.

Tri-City racing

FRANKLIN, Pa. — Tri-City Speedway presents “Five Star” Racing Action with a bit of a “Twist” on Sunday, as the ULMS Late Model Series and the 410 Super Sprint Cars take center stage and replace the Engles Trucking DIRTcar Big Block Modifieds and the 4-Your Car Connection FASTRAK Late Models.

The Sprints and the Late Models will compete in 30-lap feature events. In addition the Pro-Stocks, E-Mods and Thundercars will also be on the racing card.

Local drivers Bob Felmlee and Rob Eyler of Franklin, Rod George, the 2007 Speedway Sprint Champion, who has 48 wins at the speedway, and Ed Lynch Jr., are expected to be vying for the $2,500 first place prize money.

All Star Circuit of Champions drivers such as Dale Blaney, Greg Wilson and Danny Smith may also attempt to wrestle the first place prize money from the locals.

Adult ticket prices are $18 for all adults ages 16 or over. Students ages 13-15 will be charged, $10 and all children under the age of 12 will be admitted free.

Mercer, Pa. — Mercer Raceway Park looks forward to completing the record sixth straight night of action Saturday as $10 Single Parent Family Night presented by Door World of Hadley and Armstrong headlines the promotional slate.

In action will be the Luxaire Heating & Cooling Sprint Cars, Approved Toilet Rentals Modifieds, 4 Your Car Connection FASTRAK Late Models, GM 602 Stock Cars, Big Daddy’s Speed Center Mod Lites, and the M&D Paving Mini Stocks. It’s also the annual Twin-State Auto Racing Club Night. Race time is 7 p.m.

Adult admission is still $11 and the Family Pass remains at $25. Students 6-15 are $5 and children five and under are free.

Pit gates open at 3:30 p.m. and the grandstands at 4:30.
