District attorney to review shooting

STAFF REPORT

MERCER, Pa. — The Mercer County District Attorney says he will review reports of an episode in which two state troopers opened fire on a man, killing him.

District Attorney Robert Kochems said his initial impression is that the troopers acted properly when they shot at Walter J. McGarvey, 45, of 805 River Road in Delaware Township.

Police said the troopers arrived at the River Road address on behalf of mental health professionals who requested their help.

Police used a stun gun on McGarvey several times, the report said, but he “continued to act unruly.”

They opened fire on McGarvey after he shot at them, wounding one in the hand, a police report indicates.

The troopers, who are not identified, are on administrative leave until Kochems’ review is finished.

He said he doesn’t expect the police reports for 10 days.
