Tedesko selected

GREENVILLE, Pa. — Josh Tedesco, a senior at Thiel, was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference baseball pitcher of the week.

A native of Campbell and an Ursuline High graduate, Tedesko did not allow an earned run in 13 innings of work with no walks and eight strikeouts in posting two wins.

Tedesko (5-0) threw a complete-game 10-5 win over Bethany and he went six innings in a 17-2 decision over Westminster.

Pelini’s pact extended, salary boosted

OMAHA, Neb. — Nebraska football coach Bo Pelini signed a contract extension Monday following a 9-4 season, boosting his annual salary to $1.85 million.

The contract runs through the 2013 season and makes him the sixth-highest paid coach in the Big 12. When Pelini was hired by the Cornhuskers in 2007, his five-year contract called for a salary of $1.1 million a year.

“I hope to be in this position for a long time and help get this program back to the top of college football,” Pelini said.

Athletic director Tom Osborne announced the extension, praising the progress made under Pelini in such a short time. The Huskers shared first place in the Big 12 North and beat Clemson 26-21 in the Gator Bowl.

“We are confident he has our program moving in the right direction,” Osborne said.

Pelini succeeded Bill Callahan, whose four-year stay was marked by embarrassing losses at a football program once among the nation’s best.

Thunder moves

YOUNGSTOWN — Mahoning Valley Thunder fullback Brenton Brady will miss four or five games, possibly, after breaking his hand in last Friday’s Albany game.

Wide receiver Rob Carey also incurred a knee injury, but his status is uncertain until MRI results have been examined.

In other Thunder moves, backup quarterback Rick Webster was released and quarterback Blake Powers, a rookie out of Indiana, was acquired. Powers was traded from the Spokane Shock for future considerations.

Many eyes on Tiger

NEW YORK — Tiger Woods’ victory at Bay Hill has produced the highest overnight television rating since the U.S. Open.

Woods made up a five-shot deficit Sunday and won the Arnold Palmer Invitational with a birdie on the last hole.

NBC Sports says the final round drew a 4.9 overnight rating with a 10 share. According to Nielsen Media Research, that’s the highest rating of any golf tournament since the U.S. Open in June. Woods won that tournament in a playoff.

The Bay Hill rating was up 23 percent from last year and attracted more viewers than the British Open and PGA Championship last year when Woods did not play because of knee surgery.

Horse racing update

NEW YORK — The owners of 2008 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown have themselves a top contender for the Triple Crown races this year after purchasing a 50 percent interest in I Want Revenge.

IEAH Stables completed the deal Monday with breeder/owner David Lanzman five days before I Want Revenge runs in the $750,000 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct Racetrack — a final prep race before the Kentucky Derby on May 2.

Atlantic City baseball team ends operations

The team, which played in the independent Can-Am League, is discontinuing operations, along with another Can-Am team, the Ottawa Voyageurs.

Miles Wolff, the league’s commissioner, said Monday that a deal to sell the Surf last week fell through.

The game between Northern Ireland and Poland in Belfast was held up for several minutes while the Swedish linesman was treated for a head injury.
