YSU loses at Wright State, 11-4

DAYTON — Wright State capitalized on five Youngstown State errors and seven walks to defeat the Penguins, 11-4, in the finale of the Horizon League softball series on Sunday.
Freshman Haley Thomas led the Penguins (4-19, 2-4 HL) offensively, going 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
Thomas led off the game with a single and advanced to third after a wild pitch and a passed ball. Sophomore Kim Klonowski’s infield single scored Thomas to put the Penguins ahead 1-0.
In the second inning, freshman Amanda Palmore’s two-run single up the middle scored Kristina Rendle and Kristen Philen to give the Penguins a 3-0 lead.
The Raiders knotted the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the second, but YSU sophomore Ashley Conger hit her first career home run in the top of the third to give the Penguins the lead again, 4-3.
Wright State, though, scored two runs in the bottom of the third to retake the lead, 5-4, then added two more runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth.
Jamie Perkins hit a grand slam for the Raiders (15-14, 3-3) in the fifth inning; it was Perkins’ sixth home run of the season the fourth in her last five games.
The Penguins return home to play host to Detroit in a Horizon League doubleheader Wednesday at 5 p.m.
Women’s tennis
BOARDMAN — Youngstown State earned its fourth shutout of the year and its second Horizon League win Sunday morning with a 7-0 victory over Valparaiso.
In singles play, Sarah Lynch defeated Kim Sajevic 6-4, 6-4; Lauren Hankle defeated Molly Keifer 6-2, 7-5; Anna Volkova defeated Jenny Schwartz 6-4, 6-1; Tanisha Welch beat Katie Bilyeu 6-1, 6-0; Gretchen Cloern defeated Stephanie York 6-4, 6-0, and Nicole Haralambopoulos defeated Christine Antrobus 6-0, 6-0.
At doubles, Cloern and Lynch defeated Keifer and Schwartz 8-2; Hankle and Haralambopoulos defeated Sajevic and Bilyeu 8-1, and Volkova and Lynch defeated Burden and Jackie O’Reilly 8-0.
YSU improved to 6-9 and Valparaiso fell to 1-11.
