Teachers have ‘Pull Up Your Pants Day’

MIAMI — It was a new kind of crackdown in the halls of Plantation High on Thursday.

The target: the droopy-drawered in need of waistband support.

A group of teachers who had grown weary of seeing underpants on display organized the school’s “Pull Up Your Pants Day,” echoing the disgust of officials in cities from Opa-locka, Fla., to Flint, Mich., where saggy-bottom pants have been banned.

The teachers’ revulsion turned into action after one saw an MTV interview from last year with President Barack Obama, in which he said there didn’t necessarily need to be a law against baggy britches. “Having said that,” the president continued, “brothers should pull up their pants.”

“I became inspired,” said Diana Carter, one of the teachers.

She got Wal-Mart to donate 200 belts, and organizers rounded up parents, a former principal, alumni and community leaders to hand out the belts between classes.
