Llucky Llamas collecting cash, nonperishables for food bank
STAFF REPORT
AUSTINTOWN — Llucky Llama 4-H Club will accept monetary and nonperishable food donations for Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley’s Harvest for Hunger campaign outside Kmart on Mahoning Avenue from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Each year during March, the club raises money and collects food to help feed hungry families in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties. Last year, they raised more than $600.
The Llucky Llamas have been in existence for nine years and average 15 to 20 members per year, ranging from age 8 to 18. In addition to working with animals, youngsters are also given the opportunity to explore other interests including cooking, woodworking, model rocketry and computers.
Harvest for Hunger is a monthlong food and funds drive that takes place each March to replenish food-bank shelves during the spring and summer months when donations taper off.
Second Harvest provides food to 155 hunger-relief programs in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties. These organizations include church pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, shelters for battered women and after-school programs.
