Ohio EPA plans hearing about treatment plant

STAFF REPORT

SOUTHINGTON — The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency will have a public hearing April 6 to discuss the impact on Eagle Creek that might occur if a waste treatment plant is built in the township.

The hearing, along with an information session, begins at 6:30 p.m. at Southington Christian Church, 3285 state Route 534.

The Ohio EPA is considering a request from the Southington School District to construct a wastewater treatment system to serve the district’s new K-12 school to be located at 2482 state Route 534. Once operating, the system would discharge treated water to Eagle Creek and the Mahoning River.

Two EPA permits are needed — one for installation of the system and the other to regulate its discharge. The hearing allows citizens to give their input on the applications.

The proposed project may result in a change from the current water-quality conditions of the Mahoning River watershed, but the project cannot violate Ohio’s water-quality standards, the EPA said in a press release.

Ohio EPA will consider the project’s technical, economic, social and environmental aspects before deciding to issue or deny the permits.

Comments on the applications may be presented at the meeting or submitted in writing to: Ohio EPA, Division of Surface Water, Permits Processing Unit, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, Ohio 43216-1049.

The public comment period ends April 13.

The permit applications and related materials are available for review by calling Ohio EPA’s Northeast District Office in Twinsburg at (330) 963-1200.
