Police cracking down on RR crossing cheats
LOWELLVILLE — Police Chief William Vance said his department is cracking down on drivers who go around lowered railroad safety gates.
Vance said trains arrive within 25 to 30 seconds after a new movement-activated signal system, installed by CSX Railroad at its crossings at First and Third streets, lowers the safety gates.
Trains come through Lowellville at 50 mph, and it is not safe for drivers to weave through the gates trying to beat the trains, he said. The police chief said the situation is particularly hazardous because drivers were accustomed to seeing the gates down for a long period of time while trains were stopped at a nearby switch station. Now, he said, if the trains are stopped, the gates don’t lower.
Man shot while walking home Saturday night
SHARON, Pa. — Police are investigating a shooting in the 200 block of Mesabi Street over the weekend. Police said a 24-year-old man reported he was walking home to his apartment on Mesabi around 9 p.m. Saturday when he heard a noise like glass breaking on a nearby hillside. Then, he felt a burning pain in his left arm, police said, and saw he was bleeding. He got a ride to Sharon Regional Hospital.
The bullet was not removed from his arm, so police don’t know what type of weapon was used to shoot him. Capt. Travis Martwinski said it appears that an air gun, pellet gun or small-caliber handgun was used. The victim was released from the hospital after treatment.
