Collection for needy

YOUNGSTOWN — The United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley and AFL-CIO Community Services are coordinating the collection of items for personal care packages as part of their “Shoebox Full of Love and Hope” project.

The care packages will go to local food pantries, homeless shelters and United Way agencies to help those in need in our community.

Travel-size personal care items are preferred, and are being collected through April 15 at the United Way, 255 Watt St.

For monetary donations, please make checks payable to AFL-CIO Community Service Committee Shoebox Project, and mail to AFL-CIO Community Service Committee, 255 Watt St., Youngstown, OH 44505.

During United Way’s Youth Day of Caring on April 25, youth volunteers will put the items into tote bags or shoeboxes for distribution.

Community partners for this project include The United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley, United Way of Trumbull County, United Way member agencies, the Western Reserve Building and Trade Council, local national honor societies, the Coalition of Churches and local labor unions.

Educational meeting set

AUSTINTOWN — The Multiple Sclerosis Services Agency of Youngstown is offering an educational meeting, sponsored by Teva Neuroscience, at 6 p.m. April 7 at Austinwood’s Health Care Center, 4780 Kirk Road.

The guest speaker is Dr. Jay Berke, adult neurology specialist from the Neurocare Center in Canton.

Nursing research event

YOUNGSTOWN — Nurses from St. Elizabeth Health Center, St. Joseph Health Center and St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center are sponsoring a Nursing Research Ideas Fair from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday in the private dining rooms on 2-West at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

The event will include posters by nurses conducting research studies and information on how nursing research can improve the quality of care and the nursing research process.

The purpose of the fair is to engage more staff nurses in the research process.

Refreshments and research-related games are also a part of the program. Nurses have been encouraged to submit their ideas. If their idea is selected, they win a prize and become co-investigator and co-author of the study.

Other fairs will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 9 at St. Joseph Health Center, Warren, and April 15 at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center (Azalea Room).

Training session is free

HOWLAND — H.U.G.S. (Help Us Grow Stronger) is offering a free training session by Pat Dunlap from the Ohio Coalition for the Education of Children with Disabilities at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Children’s Rehabilitation Center, 885 Howland-Wilson Road N.E.

Adoption classes offered

WARREN — Northeast Ohio Adoption Services, (NOAS) is offering free preplacement education classes on adoption and foster care topics at Columbiana County Mental Health Board, 27 Vista Drive, in Lisbon, beginning at 6 p.m. April 17 and continuing that weekend on Saturday and Sunday.

The classes will resume at 9 a.m. May 2 and end at 4 p.m. May 3. Reservations are required by April 10. Call (800) 686-6627, ext. 126.

Transportation available

YOUNGSTOWN — For a limited time, the Youngstown YWCA is offering free transportation to appointments for mammograms, breast-cancer diagnostic testing, treatment and follow-up care at health care providers to eligible people.
