Poland school bus, car involved in accident

POLAND — No one was injured when a school bus and a car were involved in an accident Friday afternoon on state Route 170 at Lee Run Road.

Police and school district officials responded to the scene. Dr. Robert Zorn, schools superintendent, said the bus was empty except for the driver who was on the way to pick up students.

Zorn, who had not yet seen an accident report, said he believes the bus rear-ended the car.

Another bus was dispatched to pick up the students, he said.

The bus involved in the accident remains operable.

Vandalism in Campbell

CAMPBELL — Police are trying to determine why three people shot out windows in cars across the city.

Sgt. David Taybus said cars in virtually every part of the city had windows shot out with a pellet gun Thursday evening and early Friday. He said there are at least 30 complaints, but police believe there may be as many as 50.

“There are still people calling every minute,” he said. “Any car they saw on the road or close to the road was targeted.”

Police stopped a car with three occupants inside just after 4:30 a.m. Friday and plan to charge a 17-year-old Youngstown boy, a 22-year-old Boardman man and an 18-year-old Poland man riding in the car with the acts of vandalism.

Taybus said no reason was given for the vandalism.

Vehicle-theft charges

YOUNGSTOWN — A city man will face charges after police discovered a sport-utility vehicle reported stolen in his possession.

According to police reports, officers ran the plates on a Chevrolet Suburban left parked on Osborn Avenue on the West Side early Friday. The plate came back to a stolen vehicle, and officers began to tow it.

After the SUV had been hitched to a tow truck, reports say, Devin Marcus Teague, 18, of Osborn, came up to officers and said, “Oh man, you’re towing my ride ... Can I get my birth certificate and clothes out of it first?”

Reports say Teague told officers a friend of his known only as Brian gave him the vehicle free of charge.

Police found Teague’s personal papers and clothes inside the vehicle.

Town hall meeting

NORTH LIMA — State Rep. Mark Okey of Carrollton, D-61st, will discuss the proposed cul-de-sac at state Route 626 and Western Reserve Road during a town hall meeting at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Beaver Township Administration Office.

Okey also will address the possible Interstate Route 680 off-ramp between Western Reserve Road and the Ohio Turnpike.

Home destroyed by fire

SPRINGFIELD — Firefighters from Springfield, Beaver, New Middletown and the Western Reserve Joint Fire District responded to a Friday afternoon blaze that destroyed an East South Range Road home.

No one was injured, but the American Red Cross Mahoning Chapter Disaster Action Team responded to offer food, clothing and shelter.

No information was available Friday evening about the cause or damage.

Change of plea sought

LISBON — A man who pleaded guilty in the beating and shaking death of a 15-month-old boy in 2007 said Friday he wanted to change his plea.

Joshua M. Courtney, 23, of East Palestine, was to be sentenced in Columbiana County Common Pleas Court for up to eight years in prison under a plea agreement on charges of involuntary manslaughter and endangering children.

He could have faced up to 10 years in prison. He asked for new legal counsel.

Boy injured at school

WARREN — An 11-year-old student at the Lincoln K-8 school on Atlantic Street Northeast. had to have a cast placed on his leg after a fight in a school restroom.

The boy’s mother told police Thursday evening the victim and another 11-year-old boy began to argue, then pushed each other, followed by the injured boy’s being “body slammed” into the floor at about 1 p.m. Wednesday.

The mother was advised to speak with the juvenile prosecutor’s office if she wished to file charges.
